History

Sosúa has a fascinating history that sets it apart from other Dominican towns. In 1938, the Dominican Republic was one of the few countries willing to accept Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution. As a result, about 800 European Jews settled in Sosua, establishing a thriving agricultural community. This history is preserved in the Jewish Museum of Sosua, which tells the story of this unique settlement.
